15 COTTAGE WALK was built in the late 1930’s and owned by a New York City socialite Grace Johnson. Grace was a resident of the upper west side of New York City enjoying her Summers at Gilgo Beach and her winters in Florida. Grace sold her house at Gilgo Beach to the Gordon L. Taylor family of the Town of Islip where Gordon a former member of Broadway’s original cast of Carousel and Seven Lively Arts, was an elected official. Gordon spent summers as a youngster with his Sister and Parents at the summer resort community on the east end of Zack’s bay called High Hill Beach , that has since been converted into Jones Beach at Zack’s Bay by Robert Moses in 1939. Gordon loved the Ocean beaches of Long Island so much that it was natural for him to want his family to have the same pleasures, when in 1961 he bought 15 Cottage Walk (naming it Carousel). Gilgo Beach, a popular location for many, was our summer getaway for over 45 years. We remember the early days of growing up being that special time of enjoying everything Gilgo has to offer, including being the first surfers waiting patiently for delivery of our California surfboards from Hoby Alter in Dana Point, clamming in the flats of the Gilgo Channel, exploring the shallow creeks of the Gilgo Marsh, to, at that time bond fires on the beach. Gilgo a mecca for beach lovers that is convenient for New York City residents who want to enjoy the Long Island Barrier to the Atlantic Ocean without traveling for hours; an ideal summer getaway for families without the challenges of owning a boat; or the experience of a second home with amenities for retreating from the riggers of everyday life. A must see: The house called Carousel at Gilgo Beach, also the sight of scenes from the movie “The Extra Man” starring Kevin Kline, Paul Dano, Katie Holmes and John C. Reilly. |
